The Role of a Doula at a Cesearn Section
I am often asked what the role of a doula is a a c-section and for for a long time I struggled with the answer. I feel my role is to help women through their labor and avoid a c-section using natural methods. What happens when a c-section is unavoidable in cases such as placenta previa?
I don't view being a doula as a one day event that takes place at your labor. As doula I provide support throughout your pregnancy regardless of the delivery method. You will still have questions and concerns that I will help you navigate. I have found that many women that know they are going to have a c-section need additional support.
So... what exactly do I do? I will help you write your birth plan - YES, you can still have a birth plan with a c-section! Since bonding with your baby as soon as possible after birth is so important, after a c-section I will help establish breastfeeding, aid in skin-to-skin contact and help your partner understand what special needs you will have after undergoing major surgery. If permitted, during the surgery I will join you in the operating room and stay with you while your partner goes with your baby.
